Requirements for MSW Admission - Fall  2011


In order to be considered for the Master’s of Social Work or the MSW Dual Degree Programs, applicants must:

  • Meet general requirements for admission to Graduate Study at SDSU;
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree with a liberal arts foundation from an accredited college or university, or expect to be awarded prior to beginning graduate study;
  • Have a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 units (90 quarter), but not less than a 2.85 GPA. The average GPA of entering students is 3.21 overall and 3.52 for last 60 units.
  • Submit the GRE exam score on the analytical writing, quantitative and qualitative sections.
      • Faculty reviewers carefully consider only the analytical writing score to the end.
      • Applicants holding a Master’s degree from an accredited school that is a member of the Council of Graduate Schools are exempt from the GRE.
      • Dual degree MSW/MPH programs requires a minimum GRE score of 450 on qualitative and 550 on quantitative (students average entering scores are 500 and 600 respectively)
  • TOEFL examination is (only required if your medium of instruction was in a language other than English)
  • Have a minimum of approximately 500 hours of paid internship, and/or volunteer Human Services experience.
  • Complete undergraduate statistics course.

3/1/11 – For three & four year program and dual degree program applicants

Advanced Standing MSW Requirement

Applicants must possess an undergraduate degree in social work that was earned within 5 years of admission to the advanced standing program.  The undergraduate degree must come from a program that is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and the cumulative GPA for social work courses taken must be at least 3.0 or better. Applications for Fall 2010 are no longer being accepted. Information about the next application cycle will become available in the Fall. Or you may choose to attend one of the informational sessions when they start again in the Fall
