MSW Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students
Through a federal grant the social work faculty have obtained funds
for Scholarships for Disadvantaged Graduate Students. These scholarships
are awarded as grants that do not have to be repaid by the Financial
Aid Office on campus. The average grant has been about $6,000. The
range is $300 - $15,000. It is anticipated that funds for fall
will be available for new incoming and continuing MSW students.
To be eligible MSW students must complete the FASA Financial aid application
available on line from the Financial Aid Office. In addition graduate
students must complete the section on parental income in the FASA application.
Even though as a graduate student you are considered an independent
student and not required for most financial aid to complete the section
on parental income, to be eligible for this scholarship you must complete
the section on parental income.
To be eligible your parents’ income must meet federal poverty
guidelines and you must be eligible for financial aid. If you qualify
for financial aid but your parents income does not meet federal poverty
guidelines you may also qualify if your high school was located in a
federal designated poverty/low income area. The MSW application requests
information on your high school to determine your eligibility for this
scholarship.
As you apply for the MSW program you can concurrently apply for financial
aid by completing the FASA application. Financial Aid prefers that
all FASA applications be completed by March 1. If you have
questions regarding this scholarship please contact Liz Marucheau,
Student Affairs Coordinator, 619-594-5710 or email: emaruche@mail.sdsu.edu
Federal
Loan Forgiveness Program —Perkins Loan
Eligibility: Undergraduate or Graduate Students
The U.S. Department of Education has implemented legislation that will allow
some social work students who have received Federal Perkins Loans to have
their loan obligations reduced or canceled. The cancellation provision was
developed by the National Association of Social Workers as part of a larger
strategy to facilitate recruitment of social work students into areas of practice
where they are particularly needed. To qualify for a reduction or cancellation
of a Perkins loan debt you must work full time after graduation in an agency
serving high risk or disabled children, families from low income communities,
or in early intervention. Each year the student remains employed in one of
these capacities, the Perkins loan obligation is partially reduced with full
cancellation after five years. The U.S. Department of Education has allocated
a limited amount of Perkins Loan funds to SDSU. The SDSU Financial Aid Office
determines who is eligible for the Perkins Loan and traditionally awards Perkins
Loan to the neediest financial aid applicants. Perkins loan awards at SDSU
range from $300 to $3,000 per academic year. To be considered you must be
enrolled at least half time and have completed the “Free Application for Federal
Student Aid” (FASA), which is available in the SDSU Financial Aid Office.
