What made you decide to enroll in the School of Social Work at SDSU?
I received my undergraduate degree in Social Work at Fresno State and decided I wanted to further my knowledge in this profession by pursing my Masters. I have always secretly wanted to be an Aztec while applying to attend college, however, I knew in order to grow as a person I would need to leave San Diego. I understood if I enrolled in SDSU’s School of Social Work for grad school, I would be closer to home where my support systems are. This aided in my decision to apply and accept my admission into this school.
Describe your most memorable experience in the School of Social Work.
I have only attended for a semester, but my most memorable experience so far is having my fellow students, colleagues, faculty, and staff within the school support me with a donation campaign for the homeless youth population I serve.
What are your plans after graduation?
My plans after graduation are to land a full-time position working within an agency that serves at-risk youth. Eventually, I would like to move up the ranks and become a Program Manager over an agency to continue my support for at-risk youth on an administrative level.
What are some of your favorite aspects of the program?
One of my favorite aspects about the program is the sense of community we have amongst my colleagues. We are all in this together, so each one of us understands the importance of lending a helping hand to one another. I love the variety of choices of agencies that utilize us students as interns for field placement. My current field placement with Counseling Cove (SD Youth Services) has taught me a lot and is continuing to do so. Also, much emphasis is placed on self-care in our program to ensure that students are in good health while in school.
Describe why you would recommend SDSU to potential students.
I recommend potential students come to SDSU because the morale is extremely high on this campus and within our department. We have some amazing programs and opportunities afforded to us at SDSU. We are like a family here in the School of Social Work and our department does their best to ensure students feel included, comfortable, and supported. Also, I must add that we have a beautiful campus and beautiful weather, which you can never go wrong with!
