What made you decide to enroll in the School of Social Work at SDSU?
I grew up in the suburbs of Boston, and spent the better part of my life wanting to escape the cold weather. I had dreams of moving to California from a very young age. In 2012, I came to San Diego for the first time on vacation and I immediately felt at home. While attending community college in Massachusetts, I applied to SDSU as a transfer student. I spent the next year working hard to make my dream of moving to CA a reality. I was accepted into the BSW program, and in August 2013, I purchased a one way ticket to San Diego and moved into an on campus apartment at SDSU. Social work is a part of who I am, and it was always my plan to learn how to help those who are struggling. I am so grateful that my California dream led me to the SDSU school of social work.
What have been your most memorable experience in the School?
For my undergraduate international experience, I spent two weeks in Dublin, Ireland as a part of the SW596 class led by Dr. Hohman. It was my first time in Europe. I am Irish American, and it was amazing to learn about my heritage. I saw my last name, which is often misspelled in the states, spelled correctly all over Dublin. I felt right at home, and everyone was so welcoming. It was a fantastic adventure, and I learned so much from our classes and field trips in Ireland. I also learned about myself and my cultural background. It was a very eyeopening, memorable experience.
What are your plans after graduation?
Ultimately, I hope to be a voice against injustice. I want to help make this world a better place. My interests include international social work and civil rights advocacy. I hope to find a fulfilling career in one of these areas after graduation.
What are some of your favorite aspects of the program?
The diversity in the school of social work has been my favorite aspect of the program. I love how each professor has a unique background and skill set. This has made each class interesting. I’ve also enjoyed making friends in my classes. We all have different stories but come together around one common goal. It is inspiring to be a part of this cohort of future social workers.
Describe why you would recommend SDSU to potential students.
SDSU is a beautiful campus in a beautiful, sunny location. The school of social work has opened many doors for myself and for many others. Social work students who are considering SDSU should know that it is a very positive, welcoming, and encouraging environment. Moving across the country to attend this school has been the best decision I’ve ever made, and the past two years since I’ve moved have been the happiest of my life.
