Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:
Welcome back to another great semester! We have a lot of news and events this Spring, many of which makes our program so vibrant.
Faculty Monty Nominations
Each year, students, faculty, and staff are invited to nominate faculty members for the university’s Faculty Monty, which recognizes faculty who have made an outstanding contribution in their area. One faculty member is recognized representing each College. For more information, see: http://newscenter.sdsu.edu/
All School Day
We are excited to host our annual All School Day on Friday, March 18 from 8:30-12. As I have mentioned to you before, this is our event to celebrate Social Work Month. It is a chance for the School to come together as a whole. It is mandatory for MSW students and all of our BSW and Gero students are invited as well. Our committee has been working on hard on a line up of great speakers! It will be held in the Theater at the Aztec Student Center and a light breakfast will be served. If you are in field on Fridays, your attendance will count towards your field hours.
Student Success Fee Events hosted by our student orgs
Please mark you calendars for several other exciting events hosted by our various student organizations.
- Friday, February 12 from 10-3:30: The Graduate Social Work Association (GSWA) proudly presents the first annual ATTEND Summit “A Time for Thoughtful Engagement in New Directions”, an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate social work students, faculty, and practitioners to come together, share practice wisdom, and prepare future social workers for a successful career. This year’s keynote features Karen Walrond speaking about “The Beauty of Self-Compassion.” Karen Walrond is a Daring Way™ Certified Facilitator-Candidate, having been trained in Brené Brown’s work on vulnerability, courage, shame and worthiness, including the teachings of Daring Greatly and Rising Strong. This event is free and is open to all of students and community practitioners. It’s an interactive cultural humility workshop exploring personal identities and using narrative therapy ideas to tell one’s story. Two speakers will present on this topic as well as lead discussion groups.
- Director Coffees
I will be again holding open house/coffees for students on Tuesday, 2/9, Wednesday 3/23, and Monday 4/18. All are held in HH119 from 9:30-11am. Please come by to say hello, get a free cup of cheap coffee, and/or discuss anything that is on your mind.
In Situ–Our School Blog
We are always happy to post blogs that students write–anything to do with social work. If you would like to write a blog on a topic that you are interested in, please keep it to about 300-500 words and send it either to me or Dr. Engstrom directly.
