What made you decide to enroll in the School of Social Work at SDSU?
My mom was my inspiration. After dealing with many social workers after her diagnosis of terminal cancer, it was then and there that I fell in love with the profession. I took to heart what they did in order to make my mother’s last days as memorable as they could, but what I will never forget is all the help and outside resources that I received after she passed away. It was through my experience during this difficult time that I learned that I wanted to do the same to help others, by all means, to give them the resources and opportunities to live a healthy lifestyle no matter who they were or where they came from.
What have been your most memorable experience in the School?
Being part of USWA is one of my continuous memorable experiences as a college student here at SDSU. It has brightened my path once again. As college students, we tend to become too busy to have any time for volunteering or being a part of something. Being a part of this organization made me become more open with myself, feel more confident when communicating with others, and has given me the opportunity to meet amazing people and make great friends that I never would have imagined to have. Most importantly, being a member has given me the opportunity to help within the community.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to continue working for a pharmaceutical company for a year to save money in order to attend California State University Long Beach to pursue my Masters degree in Social Work. My goal is to become a Medical Social Worker.
What are some of your favorite aspects of the program?
I have met faculty and staff that are simply incredible. There are no words to describe the commitment and value they have for their students and wanting them to succeed in all aspects of the Social Work field. I’m forever in debt with all the individuals that have been there for me and have helped me tremendously during rough patches in my life. I’ve been pushed and knocked down in so many ways, but faculty and my colleagues have helped me get back on my feet and have shown me to never give up, no matter the problem.
Describe why you would recommend SDSU to potential students.
State is unique, dynamically diverse and united. Any student here is well aware what I’m describing: together we make memories and connections. SDSU grants us with that opportunity to grow as students, but most importantly to find the meaning of our lives and learn from our mistakes. We all can put together a list of why we would recommend SDSU, however it is not until you are here that you’ll look at State, take a deep breath and realize that it is you and I who make up SDSU.
