What made you decide to enroll in the School of Social Work at SDSU?
I decided I wanted to be a therapist at the age of thirteen, and after spending four years working in therapeutic settings with children, I decided I was ready for my next step in my career. I decided to enroll in the MSW program at SDSU because of the reputation that the SDSU School of Social Work has. The program is known to be competitive and is known to have a strong sense of “family” between the cohort and faculty. In addition, upon researching the program I found that SDSU is the first School of Social Work in the CSU system.
What have been your most memorable experience in the school?
Camping out in the Love Library the entire weekend before qualifying exams. It was a stressful yet bonding experience. It was an opportunity for peers in our cohort to offer support and receive support. I feel like we became closer because of it. In addition, there was a therapy dog there!
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to continue to work in a county-contracted agency to fulfill my mental health stipend requirements while working towards my licensure at the same time. I’d love to travel internationally and offer services there in the distant future in addition to opening my own practice.
I haven’t given much thought yet to a doctoral program, but I’d love to do research in the transgender community if given the opportunity.
What are some of your favorite aspects of the program?
I love the sense of family between peers in the cohort and between students and faculty. In addition, I love that the faculty really values student input and acts on those values. I also, love that the program is well-rounded offering unique classes and internships.
Describe why you would recommend SDSU to potential students.
I would recommend SDSU to potential students because there is a lot of school spirit and a lot of opportunities to speak out and make a difference on issues that you are passionate about.
