Student Name: Nha Vu
Major: Master of Social Work
Student Organization Affiliation: Gerontology Student Association, Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program Stipend
Graduation Year: 2018

What made you decide to enroll in the School of Social Work at SDSU?

After working as a social work assistant at an Adult Day Health Care and coming to understand the roles of MSWs and LCSWs, I wanted to go back to school to learn how to become a more effective social worker. I was also excited about the broad range of classes offered and could not deny the appeal of living in San Diego.

What have been your most memorable experience in the School?

I really enjoyed participating in the Intergenerational Games with the Gerontology Student Association. It was exciting to see older adults and children collaboratively come together for a fun-filled day of field games and fitness.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan on working toward my licensure while continuing to work with older adults and their families in a medical setting. I hope to use and build on what I have learned about Alzheimer’s and related dementias in the work that I do.

What are some of your favorite aspects of the program?

I really appreciate the strong relationships SDSU maintains with social service agencies in the community, which has provided for great learning opportunities at both my internships. The Geriatric Stipend program was helpful in offering relevant opportunities to gain experience working with families affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias, in both internship and classroom settings. Another plus is the sense of community within both the cohort and the stipend program.

Describe why you would recommend SDSU to potential students.

I would recommend SDSU to potential students because of the supportive environment from both peers and faculty. The combination of classes and internship experiences prepares students to enter the field as effective social workers. The faculty bring a wealth of practical experience into the classroom and students are able to connect internship experiences to classroom learning. SDSU also offers classes and electives that cover a broad range of interesting topics.
