What made you decide to enroll in the School of Social Work at SDSU?
It was a very easy decision. How nice it would be if all of life’s decisions were this easy. My number one reason in choosing SDSU’s School of Social Work is family. I am a single father, and I receive a ton of support from family. The campus is nearby, so relocating isn’t necessary. The School of Social Work at SDSU is not only accessible, but it’s also a prestigious and highly recognized program. Knowing the reputation of SDSU’s School of Social Work gives me confidence that attainment of an MSW from SDSU will grant me access to opportunities that I would not have had access to otherwise. The factor that sealed the deal on my choice to enroll here was the opportunity to receive the Title IV-E Child Welfare stipend. Not to sound like an advertisement, but SDSU’s School of Social Work made it possible for me to pursue my educational/professional endeavors.
What have been your most memorable experience in the School?
My most memorable experiences in the program have to be study time with my peers. Although there is always so much to be done, we always have a good time.
What are your plans after graduation?
I definitely foresee a celebration with lots of sweet and fattening treats immediately following graduation. As far as my professional plans, I would love to continue to develop my skills with Imperial County Department of Social Services and provide services to a community I know and love. At the same time, I plan to begin my clinical hours and embark on the next step in obtaining licensure as a licensed clinical social worker.
What are some of your favorite aspects of the program?
There are so many things that I enjoy about the MSW program here at SDSU. Some of the most influential of these things are the helpfulness of our professors. So far, our professors have been extremely helpful and do their best to work with the students and our personal lives. Their experience and knowledge are easy to admire. These same professors also have shown a level of respect to students that I haven’t experienced before in an educational setting. Personally, this provides myself with an extra sense of pride in being a member of the 2020 MSW cohort at SDSU – IVC. Mr. Ernie Zuniga and Ken Nakamura have been very helpful in adjusting to our transitions and are extensions of my support network. In addition, my classmates are awesome, and I get to study what I enjoy.
Describe why you would recommend SDSU to potential students.
SDSU offers a solid educational experience that’s also fun and rewarding. The university and administration are happy to help and good at it. I can’t speak for every program, but the School of Social Work at SDSU has given me a sense of belonging. We’re a family here.
