SDSU School of Social Work Field Faculty and Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC) Coordinator, Paul Brazzel, LCSW, will serve as the new President of the California Association of School Social Workers (CASSW). The CASSW is an organization comprised of a volunteer board of professional school social workers from across California. CASSW is dedicated to promoting the professional development of school social workers in order to enhance the educational experiences of students and their families. CASSW is an independent organization that is affiliated with the California Chapter of the National Association of School Social Workers (NASW), and has status as a School Social Work Council by virtue of membership in NASW.
Mr. Brazzel is a Class of 2000 graduate of the SDSU MSW Program. Since 2003, he has served as a field instructor for the SDSU School of Social Work, and clinically supervises social workers as they work toward licensure. He has served for many years as a school social worker, where he has developed expertise in positive behavior support, human development, and restorative practices. Mr. Brazzel has worked closely with school administration and teachers to improve school culture by analyzing school survey data and encouraging implementation of social emotional curriculum across all grades.
In his role as CASSW president, Mr. Brazzel will serve as a strong advocate for the increased presence of social work programs, services, and personnel in schools. He will work with other graduate schools in social work throughout California to promote the overall health of the profession through best practices and will continue to provide support to the preparation and career-building of future school social workers. He is looking forward to collaborating with other school social workers and field faculty across the state of California, the School Social Work Association of America, as well as the California Association of School Counselors and California Association of School Psychologists.
