Welcome to our new Field Faculty, Jessica Rathbun and Paul Brazzel!
Please welcome Jessica Rathbun, one of the new members of the Field Faculty team. Ms. Rathbun attended Point Loma Nazarene in 2000 with her B.A. in Therapeutic and Community Psychology and later graduated from San Diego State University in 2011 with her Masters in Social Work. She currently works as a Senior Program Manager at SAY San Diego; overseeing several juvenile delinquency prevention and intervention programs. Prior to her work at SAY San Diego she worked at Booz Allen Hamilton as a Senior Consultant providing strategic planning and workforce optimization for U.S. Navy clients. Ms. Rathbun also has experience working with homeless population during her time at the YWCA as well as the co-founder of Dreams for Change’s The Fresh Food Truck. She was also the co-founder of Get Empowered Today, a small non-profit designer to work with communities to educate and empower young adults to achieve their dreams.
Ms. Rathbun’s passion is criminal justice system reform and she is an advocate for trauma-informed care in working with clients and communities. She wholeheartedly believes in the importance of building relationships with community members and partner organizations as it is through these connections and constantly taking a learner’s stance, that we are best able to come alongside and support our youth and families. Ms. Rathbun is excited to join the Field Faculty team at SDSU. Ms. Rathbun will be teaching one section of SW 489 in Spring 2018.
Please also welcome Paul Brazzel as one of the new members of the Field Faculty team. Mr. Brazzel graduated with his MSW from San Diego State University in 2000. Mr. Brazzel is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and holds his PPS Credential in School Social Work and Child Welfare Attendance. Mr. Brazzel has seventeen years of experience working with children, youth and families in the areas of early education, foster care, and child and family therapy. Early in his career, his work in a residential treatment center in Oregon sparked his interest in social work and led him to pursue his MSW at SDSU. His many years as a school social worker have given him expertise in positive behavior supports, human development and restorative practices. Mr. Brazzel has worked closely with school administration and teachers to improve school culture by analyzing school survey data and encouraging implementation of social emotional curriculum across all grades. He has supported students and families individually and by partnering with community agencies. Furthermore, he has been a school district trainer for Restorative Practices and Trauma Informed Practices.Paul is dedicated to supporting and developing professional social workers. He has been a field instructor for SDSU’s School of Social Work since 2003 and clinically supervises social workers toward their licensure. He is looking forward to his new role as a Lecturer and PPSC Coordinator. Mr. Brazzel will be teaching one section of SW 650 and one section of SW 750 in Spring 2018.
