“Motivational Interviewing in Field Instruction”
Friday, February 21, 2025
8:30am to 11:30am
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a communication method that has been extensively studied in settings such as substance use and other health care concerns, to guide clients toward healthier behaviors. It can also be used in field instruction, as it can model effective interactions, is an evidence-based practice, and helps to create a safe setting for student interns to manage their anxiety. The Four Processes of MI– Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, and Planning– provide a framework for field instructors who want to have a guiding conversation with interns toward a particular change goal. A Meta conversation, or a conversation about the supervision conversation, can help interns self-reflect and apply the modeled skills. This workshop covers these topics and includes a conversation demonstration and practice.

“MI Conversations with Interns: Practice and Reflection”
Friday, March 21, 2025
8:30am to 11:30am
Have any challenging situations for student interns? This interactive workshop will give Field Instructors in-depth opportunities to practice MI/motivational conversations to help students in their interactions with clients or colleagues. Using a group-coaching format, we will use your field experiences to strategize and role-play supervision approaches and skills that best fit your agency contexts. *Please note that it is recommended that participants attend “Motivational Interviewing in Field Instruction” prior to this workshop.
