Health and Human Services Experience
Health and Human Services experience includes direct engagement with individuals, groups, families, or communities through paid work, volunteer service, internships, or research.
Please note: in your application, you will be required to describe specifically how your experience(s) are related to enhancing or supporting the well-being of individuals, families, and communities in need.
As a reminder, our MSW Admissions Committee will take your University Online Application and your MSW Program Online Application, including your 1000 hours of health and human experience, and holistically review all your materials based on the following selection criteria: Academic Preparation; Scholarly Potential & Intellectual Curiosity; Leadership & Civic Engagement; Interpersonal Skills; and Alignment with Program & Social Work Values.
The following are common settings where it is possible to gain experience in health and human services, though this list is NOT exhaustive.
Examples of Settings:
- After-school programs
- Community-based organizations
- Nonprofit organizations, including County or County-contracted health or social programs.
- Schools (K-12; higher education)
- Senior Centers
- Advocacy programs
- Treatment centers
- Churches
- Community organizing
- Hospitals
- CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate)
- Peace Corps
- Food Pantry/Meals on Wheels
- Red Cross
- YMCA
- Social service or health-related research settings
- Human Resources
All hours will be reviewed and evaluated by the Admissions Committee. For all experience hours submitted in your application, you will be required to explain how your experience hours contributed to supporting or improving the well-being of individuals, families, or communities in need.
